I am reminded of a story I read on a long flight home from Australia some years ago. I started to get antsy because the flight was very long. We spent over twenty-eight hours in flight. I had read my books, watched my movies and finished my study. Soon I found myself walking back and forth in the aisles getting some exercise in hopes of shaking off the boredom. The life of a motivational speaker is not always glamorous.
I came across a senior citizens magazine and much to my surprise I really enjoyed reading it. In my sales training work, I often help companies re-train or coach their “more mature” workers. While in flight, I read a story about a young man heading to Africa for his first safari. He was understandably anxious because he knew the jungle held many mysteries. He remembered with great trepidation, stories of those poor souls who had been eaten alive in the jungle. He had no intentions of being the next meal for a hungry lion!
After his arrival at the safari campsite, he whisked away one of the native guides and said, "Sir, I've heard that if you carry a torch in the jungle, the wild animals won't harm you, is that true?" The wise Safari guide smiled and whispered gently, "That depends on how fast you carry the torch!" THAT DEPENDS. Those are powerful words to a sales trainer or company leader.
Those two little words are so important to those in leadership and sales. If we are to walk in victory over the obstacles in our sales career we better understand the power behind them.
Question: Are you going to continue to work a job you hate, working with people you don't respect while feeling unfulfilled? Will you really stay put, all for the wonders of sick leave benefits?
It depends, doesn’t it, on your desire to overcome those obstacles. It depends on how you value your own worth personally and professionally. These are powerful concepts for the sales trainer and company leader.
Will you stay in a marriage that needs your complete commitment and possible marriage counseling? That depends, doesn't it? It depends on your desire to be made whole and to experience healing in that marriage.
Will you allow yourself to have a sense of humor about some of the things in your life that you have no control over? That depends, doesn't it?
A seasoned sales trainer or leader knows the importance of commitment. If you are dealing with obstacles in your life, make the commitment today to walk in victory over them. As most successful leaders will tell you…it depends on you!
Make it a great selling day and remember…
"If you don't sell more, you’re out of business!"
