Louis Braille Story
In 1812, when three-year old Louis Braille was boring holes with an awl in a heavy piece of leather in his fathers harness shop in Coup Vray, France, a terrible accident happened. The result of that awl accident caused the child to become blind.
Seventeen years later, the blind youth invented the Braille system which is now used worldwide, opening up new worlds to millions of blind people. Not only did the invention bring a new kind of sight to Louis Braille, but the tragedy of blindness was the means by which generations of blind people have been helped.
